NOBEL Women stands as the only network of Black women elected state legislators in the United States, collectively representing over 20 million Americans. The organization serves as a crucial voice for Black communities, advocating for the needs and interests of its constituencies to the media, legislatures, and government bodies. Through strategic communication and leadership, NOBEL Women continues to affect meaningful change on a national level.
Recognizing the evolving role of Black women in society, NOBEL Women has partnered with the Center for American Women in Politics at Rutgers University's Eagleton Institute of Politics to establish the "NOBEL Women Lois M. DeBerry Leadership Training and Educational Development Institute" (commonly known as the DeBerry Leadership Institute). Founded in 2002, the Institute aims to identify, educate, cultivate, and elevate the next generation of Black women leaders in state government. Through comprehensive training programs, the Institute equips participants with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in public leadership, providing a vital network of support for those engaged in public policy and leadership roles.
The DeBerry Leadership Institute is now accepting applications for the 2025 program, which offers a unique opportunity for aspiring leaders to develop their skills and advance their political careers. The application deadline is November 1, 2024.
The 2025 program will kick off with a 3-4 day conference in January, co-hosted by the Center for American Women in Politics at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. The program will continue through the summer of 2025, culminating at the NOBEL Women annual meeting. Participants will also have the chance to attend four webinars during the spring, join virtual networking sessions, and benefit from a mentorship program to further their leadership journey.
Curriculum Highlights Include:
The program fee for participants is $3,500, covering travel, accommodations, meals during in-person sessions, and program materials. To ensure the program remains accessible to all, a limited number of scholarships are available based on financial need and availability. Participants may also seek corporate sponsors to help cover the cost.
For more information about program fees or scholarships, please contact NOBEL Women at (504) 701-5843.
The Institute has trained and connected hundreds of Black women who have gone on to serve in elected office and leadership roles in government. It is the only national leadership institute focused exclusively on advancing Black women’s leadership in statehouses. Through real-world training in campaign strategy, advanced leadership skills, and public policy development, fellows gain invaluable insights from experienced practitioners and leaders.
