State Representative Kamia L. Brown is a Florida native, born and raised in Orlando. She has an extensive career in government, working for the Florida Legislature for nearly 13 years. Over that timeframe, she has been instrumental in drafting and implementing key legislative policy and representing communities from Jacksonville to Orlando to South Florida.
Beginning her career as an intern then legislative aide, she has been responsible for speech writing, bill drafting, constituent communications and overall office management. Brown also planned events and acted as a liaison to local, state and federal agencies and officials.
A testament to her hard work and leadership, Kamia Brown was promoted to Chief Legislative Aide (CLA). Serving as Senior Aide to Democratic Leader Pro Tempore, Joe Gibbons, she had the opportunity to not only help craft key legislative policy for the Democratic leadership team, but to help create long term political strategies and goals.
Today, Representative Brown is the House Democratic Leader Pro Tempore, and Vice Chair of the Florida Legislative Black Caucus. She currently serves on the Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee as the Democratic Ranking Member, Health & Human Services Committee, Congressional Redistricting Subcommittee, Appropriations Committee, Insurance & Banking Subcommittee, Rules Committee and the Tourism, Infrastructure & Energy Subcommittee.
Kamia Brown has always been committed to public service. From her volunteerism while in college at Florida A&M University (FAMU) to her work now with nonprofits groups in South Florida, Tallahassee and Orlando, she believes in giving back to her community.
The youngest of three children, Brown is a member of Saint Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church where she has served in several ministries including the Progressive Usher Board, Daughters of Ruth and advisor to the Young People’s Department. Mentoring has been a passion of hers since college; she believes as Oprah Winfrey once said, “A mentor is someone that allows you to see hope inside yourself.” She believes that we have to inspire our youth to believe in themselves and achieve regardless of their situation.
A proud Rattler, Brown received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a concentration in Public Administration from FAMU.Kamia has received several awards from various organizations for service including “Legislative Aide of the Year” by the Florida Professional Firefighters Association.She was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2016 and then re-elected unopposed in both 2018 and 2020, representing the 45thdistrict which includes West Orange County.
