The National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women is mourning the loss of our beloved founder and Board of Directors member, the Honorable Gwen Moore.
The Honorable Gwen Moore was first elected to the California State Legislature in 1978 and served for 16 years until 1994, representing California’s 49th district (redistricted and renumbered in 1990 as the 47th district), which currently includes Long Beach, Catalina Island and parts of Los Angeles and Orange counties.
While serving in the Assembly, she introduced over 400 bills that were signed into law. She also served as Majority Whip and was a member of a number of influential committees, including the Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committee.
Moore served on the California State Bar Board of Trustees, the California Small Business Association board, and the national board of the NAACP. She was also First Vice President of the California State Conference of the NAACP, Vice-Chair of the California Utility Diversity Council, Chairwoman of the California Black Business Association, and President Emeritus of The Future PAC.
The Honorable Gwen Moore’s work has brought honors and awards from diverse arenas, including the U.S. Department of Commerce, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Professional Communication Association, and Legislator of the Year award from NBCSL. She also received the prestigious Black Rose Award from the National League of Black Women, the Business of the Year from the Black Business Association, the Leadership California’s State Leader Award, and the Professional Communication Association. In 2013, Ms. Moore was inducted into the CA NAACP Hall of Fame in Sacramento.
“When I received the news of the Honorable Gwen Moore’s passing, I was devastated,” said NOBEL President Karen Camper. “Not only was she a mentor and friend, but she was also a woman that modeled what it means to be a black woman dedicated to public service. Gwen Moore, along with the other phenomenal founders of NOBEL Women, had the foresight and vision to know the importance of creating spaces for our leadership. I will always remember her enthusiasm and her willingness to serve NOBEL Women as a founder, advisor, and member. She has been a guiding light and I will truly miss her.”
